SOMETHING ABOUT SILICEA TERRA – PART 1

Scars suddenly become painful. Silica can stimulate the organism to re-absorb fibrotic conditions and scar-tissue.

It is related to all fistulous burrowings.

Intolerance of alcoholic stimulants.

Swelling in the glabella.(like Fluoric acid......Note : Some objective pointers like Linea nasalis of Aethusa, swollen upper lip of Calc carb, moth patches of Sepia and Caulo etc .need to be studied and analysed in light of modern medical knowledge...but nevertheless they are prominently mentioned in our Materia medica)

Exostosis;Ascending effects, Indifference to religion (Dr.Phatak)

PULS is a hot blooded patient but after using that remedy for a while you notice that the patient goes to the other extreme and becomes chilly and wants much clothing, the heat is taken out of the case. SIL is the natural follower of PULS and you would be astonished how often a patient leaving PULS runs toward SIL. SIL goes deeper into the case, it does more curing, and it is the natural chronic of PULS. Other remedies of course follow PULS, but SIL more frequently than any other medicine. When SIL has been administered for a while it cures the cold state and removes the chilliness of the patient (remember, however, that SIL at times has something of PULS in it; in some of its complaints it is aggravated from overheating) and the patient under SIL goes back to the warm state again, becomes warm blooded, wants the warm covers thrown off, wants to be lightly covered. Then it is that FL-AC comes in the series. FL-AC follows SIL as naturally as SIL follows PULS. They exist in threes. It is true that PULS, SIL and FL-AC are similar all along the line as to the nature of their symptoms.(Dr.Kent and Dr.Gaskin)
Silica feels the cold strongly, but one must also remember that, during acute ailments, Silica can also be intolerant to warm stuffy rooms - like Pulsatilla. Conversely, Silica can be aggravated by drafts, even though he or she may not feel the draft particularly. (Dr.Vithoulkas)

Why is Silicea called as Surgeon’s knife? : It forms Sodium silicate, a thin watery, transparent fluid around foreign bodies and provokes the opening or the tract by applying pressure and thus facilitates the expulsion of foreign bodies.

Silicea is probably the most refined of all constitutional types. Almost everything about Silicea is refined; intellect, Aesthtic look, moral sensitivity etc.Only Ignatia and Arsenicum come close to its refinement.

SOMETHING ABOUT VERATRUM ALBUM

Verat album is very well known.......hyperactivity(destructibility on in the later stage),show off ,liar, haughty ,manias(violent, religuous ,lascivious...each trying to SUPERCEDE OTHER two);fancies of pregnancy etc ......

Here is some excerpt from Talcott which explains how these manias interchange.....

Tendency to tear and cut clothing.

When the rage of mania subsides, there is a tendency to converse about religious matters.

The religious natures of the Veratrum patients become chameleon hued in their manifestations.

They pray and curse in alternation for many hours in succession.

Finally these patients despair of salvation, and of their position in society.

When disengaged from religious contemplation, the Veratrum patients are inclined to gossip, to find fault with others, to scold their friends, and to call their neighbors hard names.

The Veratrum patients sometimes fancies herself pregnant, even when eighty or ninety years of age.
MIASMS IN DIFFERENT EYES

Hahnemann's miasm theory,as it has become known, has been a difficulty for homoeopathic practioners ever since. Some have responded like  Stapf and Gross, with embarrasment;others have seen it as the most brilliant contribution to Homoeopathy.Early English writers such as Dudgeon and Hughes were outright in their condemnation of it,while early Americans such as Allen and Kent seized upon it as the missing element in an otherwise perfect science. To this day many practioners ignore it while others make it the foundation of their practice.

If you take Nash book 'Leaders'. I like Nash, because he is reliable. There is nothing in Nash that I have read, especially his materia medica, that you can remove, that you can say he is wrong for it, or is not confirmed. It is like each thing that he says about his materia medica is something that is confirmed it is like a brick of a building. You cannot change, you can only build on it, but you cannot remove. There are other materia medica, you read it and you cannot associate with it at all.

SOMETHING ABOUT CALC CARB

1) Desire we eggs and aversion to meat..... We all know that.... The exact opposite.... Desire for meat and aversion to eggs is Ferr met

2)About 40 % of children need this remedy in the first few years of their life (Ghegas)

3)Most of the problems stem from their passivity. They may be too open to influences from their surroundings, too easily affected, hypersensitive or too armoured and isolated in order to compensate for their lack of ability to meet a challenge by initiative - thus becoming stubborn and obstinate(Whitmont)
SOMETHING ABOUT SULPHUR.....

We know that Sulphur should not be given after Calc carb....similarly it should not be given after Aurum met also...as it may spoil the case

REPERTORY AND MATERIA MEDICA (RPERTORY vs. MATERIA MEDICA part 1)

The basic method of homeopathy is to take a complete case, do a good case analysis and find a correspondence in the materia medica. If you do not find the rubric, don't worry, the rubric is there to lead you to the materia medica. If you have only found one remedy in the materia medica and it corresponds, be sure you have a cure, regardless of what is in the repertory.

(Dr.Andre Saine)
LECTHIN - 'THE ARNICA OF MIND'

It is not an uncommon remedy for brain fag. It is probably one of the four or five most regarded remedies for brain fag, especially when occurring in students. I'm telling you that, because many of you are students and it's picture results from excess studying, very commonly from excess studying. Lecithin is sometimes called the 'Arnica of the mind', so for brain fag following emotional shock, or strong emotions, or exertion of the mind. They can absolutely not concentrate or think. There will be some irritability with this, but you will especially notice that brain fag. It may be difficult to pick out Lecithin from other remedies.

There will be a few characteristic symptoms that I remember by heart. It is one of the remedies; I don't think it is in the repertory that burps loud, loud eructation. They will have a lot of flatulence and a lot of eructation, a bit like Argentum nitricum. There will also be a total loss of sexual power in Lecithin. Lecithin is very close to Phosphoricum acidum and to Phosphorus. Phosphoricum acidum, depression or brain fag after a grief. Lecithin will be the same thing and you may be misled, because one contains the other. If Phosphorus would have brain fag, or depression, in terms of the sexual power it is the opposite. The more Phosphorus gets weak, the higher is the sexual desire. But with Lecithin, that will be an easy differential symptom with Phosphorus, with Lecithin the sexual desire is gone with the brain fag

(Dr. Andre Saine)

Lecithin is not unknown to us... But we owe to Dr. Andre Swine for elaborating this aspect for us.
We  hav been using  Lecithin in anaemia succesfully ..... I guess it is a neglected galactagogue.

Trying to understand some words in our Homeopathic Materia Medica : CHAGRIN

CHAGRIN
Chagrin (noun)
annoyance or shame at having failed
(Compact Oxford dictionary)

distress of mind caused by humiliation, disappointment, or failure
(Merriam Webster )

In our Synthesis repertory CHAGRIN is the cross reference of 'ailments from mortification '

(Many a times we take for granted the meanings of certain words in our Homeopathic literature..... Which is such a wrong habit... Isn't it?)

PRESCRIBING TIP FROM Dr. H. A. Roberts and Sir Boenninghausen

Our way, too, must lie in the golden mean between these two points, the one too general and the other too individual to assure us of a true totality. If we can find a remedy that has the "more striking, particular, unusual and peculiar (characteristic) signs and symptoms of the case" and in addition covers the chief complaint as well, we may consider ourselves as having a sound basis for the prescription of the simillimum.

 - Art and science are inseparably bound together, Every art has its foundation in science, and every science finds its expression in art.

Consciously or unconsciously the artist or the craftsman at work is applying principles and laws, formulated and systematized knowledge of which constitutes science.

Exceptionally an artist, by virtue of inherent capacity and genius, may not be aware that he is applying scientific principles in his work. The "Art Instinct," when powerful, may express itself spontaneously and naturally by force of an internal feeling or native impulse, grasping principles intuitively and subconsciously and developing its own methods of technique through individual experience. But such endowment is rare, and even the greatest natural genius does not reach his highest development until he has awakened to the existence of theories, laws and principles and viewed his work consciously from the scientific stand point.

DREAMS AND HOMOEOPATHY
(part 1)

I consider any dream worthy of inclusion in the analysis of the case if

I. Dream is recurrent
II. The dream has made a big impression on the patient

Having decided that a particular dream is worthy of being included in your case analysis, there are three ways of using the dream as a symptom

• Consult the repertory
• Ask the patient to interpret the dream
• Attempt an interpretation of the dream

SOMETHING ABOUT THE FEES POLICY OF Dr. HAHNEMANN

Hahnemann's policy on fees for his services had not changed throughout his career, since his days in Hettstedt. As far as possible he kept to the principle of ' no cure, no fee'and the fees were calculated on a sliding scale according to the patient's   means, whereby the poor would pay nothing at all.

SOMETHING ABOUT CHINA
(PART I - RELATIONSHIP AND GLIPMSE OF MIND)

PARTIALLY SIMILAR to Nux-v, Lyco, Chel and Nat –m.With only temporary or partial improvement after these remedies think of China. (Dr.Franz Vermeulen)

China was the first remedy proved by Hahnemann, but Vithoulkas' observations elucidated the personality of the remedy. The China patient is introverted, intense and 'touchy'. The internal sensitivity is similar to Natrum Muriaticum; the tendency to take offense is more reminiscent of Nux Vomica. This combination of sensitivity, idealism and extreme touchiness makes China a useful remedy in teenagers. (Dr.Roger Morrison)

It is difficult to make contact with China patients because they don’t like superficial contacts and can be abusive, impolite and inconsequential in answering questions. They will open up when they feel real interest and sympathy (Dr.Ghegas)
Even the physical modality reflects this... Slight touch aggravates but hard pressure ameliorates

Touchy = easily offended

BACK TO BASICS - INIMICAL REMEDIES

Inimicals are remedies when given sequentially, often give strong primary aggravations and complicate the case by producing new peculiar symptoms.Because they have so much in common, there is a close relationship symptomatically.Rather than giving them in sequence ,you should use an intercurrent between the twoinimicals.Inimical remedies, frequently those having similar action and perhaps stemming from a congenial source, seem able to thwart each other,s action and to correct the disordered state of the Vital force which was created by the primary action of the first remedy given. The more closely similar the remedies ,the greater of the similarity of their symptoms, the greater the risk of antagonism between them, and the more certsin the second remedy will injure the case. The Homoeopath needs to have a great respect for inimical remedies or  great many cases will be spoiled.(Dr.Luc dr Schepper)

WHEN STUART CLOSE  MENTIONS ABOUT BOENNINGHAUSEN'S OBSERVATIONS ( addendum Dr. Nash in his Materia Medica and Allen keynotes reference)

Deficient reaction or diminished susceptibility may exist in a case or appear during treatment and constitute a condition requiring special treatment. This is especially true in the treatment of chronic diseases, where improvement ceases and well selected remedies do not seem to act. Under such circumstances it may sometimes be necessary to give a due of what is called an "intercurrent remedy." Bœnninghausen mentions as appropriate in such cases: Carbo veg., Lauroc., Mosch., Op., Sulph. To these may be added the typical nosodes: Medorr., Psor., Pyrog., Tuberc., Syphil.,. and also Thuja. The choice of any particular one of these remedies must be governed by the history and symptoms.

Addendum :
Dr. Nash
The fact that Opium is capable of banishing pain, or, rather, I should say, rendering the organism incapable of sensing pain, is one of the chief indications for its use in homœopathic therapeutics. There is not only complete absence from pain, but as complete unsusceptibility to general drug action. You know that we are told that when the seemingly indicated remedy does not act give Sulphur. Now it may be that Opium is a better remedy to give, if all there is of the case is that there seems to be no vital reaction. Sulphur would be likely to be the best remedy if the lack of reaction were due to some psoric taint; but even here all the symptoms must be taken into account. Laurocerasus is another remedy to arouse reaction when it seems to depend upon excessively low vitality. Psorinum may succeed in psoric obstructions to vital reactions when Sulphur fails. There is nothing to be more condemned in homœopathic prescribing than routinism.

Dr.HC Allen mentions Valeriana also bring  in such conditions

Something morefrom Dr.Nash
Capsicum, lack of reaction in persons of lax fibre."
Opium, in patients where there is no pain; stupidity and drowsiness.
Valerian and Ambra in nervous affections, well chosen remedies fail.
Carbo vegetabilis, collapse, coldness of knees, breath; perfect indifference.
Sulphur and Psorinum, where Psora complicates and hinders reaction.

Each one of these remedies may he called for in defective reaction, and there may be many more, and in each case, as with all remedies elsewhere, symptoms must decide whichone.

CLINICAL POINTERS AND REMEDY RELATIONSHIP

We know that Silicea and Fluoric acid are complementary remedies;Fluoric acid should be considered after Silicea has been abused in suppurative conditions.(Dr.Pulford)

Relationship of Fluoric acid is very well enlisted in Allen's keynotes
A Psychiatrist talks about Homoeopathy (One of the most subtle and thought provoking lines that I  came across)

To be a Homoeopath is to believe in the law of similarity and to believe in the law of similarity
means to believe more in the reaction of the organism than in the action of the environment.Otherwise we are not Homoeopaths. To believe in the law of similarity is to believe in dilutions, and to remember that a remedy is dynamic when it acts, but but it is only Homoeopathic when the physician decides that remedy, given to the healthy individual causes what he says that particular patient has.
ONLY THE PHYSICIAN MAKES A REMEDY HOMOEOPATHIC , PHARMACISTS ONLY MAKE DYNAMIC REMEDIES .

- Dr.Fernando R (Venezuelan Psychiatrist and practicing Homoeopath)

Noteworthy is that such depth and refinement in thought comes from a country we can hardly loacte on world map and only know about it because of school geography lessons and Beauty pageants...as we know many beauty pageant winners are Venezuelan beauties.

1)Mind : Materialistic(Fluoric acid) , superstitious, unrefined

2)Relations. - Patients requiring Conium often improve from wine or stimulants, though persons susceptible to Conium cannot take alcoholic stimulants when in health. Compare: Arn., Rhus in contusions; Ars., Aster, in cancer; Cal., Psor. in glandular swellings. Is followed well: by, Psor. in tumors of mammae with threatening malignancy.

FIVE DISEASES OF HOMOEOPATHY

1)IGNORANCE : our ignorance of subjects is so big
2)IDOLISATION :idolosing people, making guru's
3)EGOTISM: of colleagues and guru's, like the "I know" ,"I will tell you what to do attitude"
4)DOGMATISM:"this is the ONLY way"not bases on facts but on dogma, on opinion. If you think this method is the only way, it has to be based on facts and not only on opinion.
5)DEVIATION FORM THE INDUCTIVE METHOD.
Importance of observation ND not imagination.
Imagination is there to sometimes help you to do a theory, to further observe. Discovery is made from observation.

AN EXCERPT FROM THE LESSER WRITINGS OF Dr. HAHNEMANN - The medical observer

The capability of observing accurately is never quite an innate faculty; it must be chiefly acquired by practice, by refining and regulating the perceptions of the senses, that is to say, by exercising a sever criticism in regard to the rapid impressions we obtain of external objects, and at the same time the necessary coolness, calmness and firmness of judgement must be preserved, together with a constant distrust of our own powers of apprehension .

The vast importance of our subject should make us direct the energies of our body and mind towards the observation; and great patience, supported by the power of the will, must sustain us in the direction until the completion of the observation.

HOMOEOPATHY AND SOCIAL MEDICINE

In the footnote to § 271 he outlines a social and philanthropic medical service whereby the sick, whether rich or poor, would be given free remedies through the bounty of the State.(Dr.Pierre Schmidt - Hidden treasures of the sixth edition )
A new foot-note is added in the Sixth Edition, as follows: "Until the State, in the future, after having attained insight into the indispensability of perfectly prepared homoeopathic medicines, will have them manufactured by a competent impartial person, in order to give them free of charge to homoeopathic physicians trained in homoeopathic hospitals, who have been examined theoretically and practically, and thus legally qualified. The physician may then become convinced of these divine tools for purposes of healing, but also to give them free of charge to his patients - rich and poor". -

WISDOM FROM VITHOULKAS SIR

It is just an excerpt from essence of Materia Medica ,from Nux vom drug picture by VIthoulkas Sir.I feel I lucidly states  a very fundamental concept.

As always in homoeopathy, however, we must be careful not to prescribed Nux vomica on the basis of such positive and constructive personality traits. Unlike the techniques of astrology, palmistry, handwriting analysis, physiognomy and others, which describe the qualities of the person - whether for good or bad - homoeopathy bases its prescriptions on the pathological state of the person. We would not wish to give a remedy which might make a person less pragmatic and efficient! So, let us consider the states in the development of the pathological state requiring Nux vomica for cure.

SULPHUR - ASSORTED part 1

Dr.BLACKWOOD: It is frequently of use in nervous derangements of the climacteric period, when there are hot flushes during the day, with weak, faint spells that pass of with a little seating.

Dr.BOERICKE :Sulphur -  When carefully-selected remedies fail to act, especially in acute diseases, it frequently arouses the reactionary powers of the organism.

Dr.CLARKE (DECACHORDS)  :Mental and physical inertia; selfish, self-important, obstinate; chronic grumbler; melancholy yet often full of daydreams (even illusions) producing a foolish kind of happiness; lack of concentration; weak of memory especially for names and recent events; over-sensitiveness to bad odours.

Dr.MORRISON :Laziness is one of the grand characteristics of the Sulphur patient. He constantly procrastinates in his tasks. He thinks of many projects but rarely undertakes them. He may prefer to sit and discuss philosophy to actually working on practical matters. One Sulphur patient expressed this trait by reading many magazine reviews of books because, although he wished to be well-versed on current literature, he just couldn't find the effort needed to readthe book itself.

WHEN RHUS TOXICODENDRON FAILS - part 1

Dr.EB NASH -Phytolacca decandra - Dr.H.C. Allen says: Phytolacca occupies a place midway between Bryonia and Rhus tox., and will often help when these seem indicated but fail.

Dr. ROBIN MURPHY Rhus venenata - History - Rhus-v. in one of the most actively poisonous of the Rhus. The skin symptoms of this species of Rhus are most severe. P. B. Hoyt, who first drew attention to it and made the first provings, says it is more poisonous than Rhus-t., which he can handle with impunity, while he was violently affected by Rhus-v. in spite of extreme caution. Further, he considers it more actively curative in a case of Rhus sore throat, when Rhus-t. failed Rhus-v. acted with excellent effect.

Rhus toxicodendron - Calc Carb ----Dr.EA FARRINGTON

We now come to the study of the action of Rhus on the fibrous tissues. Allow me to include under this tissue the aponeuroses and tendons of muscles, the ligaments about joints and the connective tissue. No remedy has a more profound action on the fibrous tissues than has Rhus tox. First of all, I will speak of its action on the tendons of muscles. We find Rhus useful whenever these tendons are inflamed, whether it be from over-exertion or from a sudden wrenching, as in the case of a sprain. We find, also, that we may give Rhus in other affections arising from over-exertion. For example, if a musician from prolonged performing on wind instruments suffers from pulmonary haemorrhages, Rhus will be his remedy. If from violent exertion a patient is seized with paralysis, his trouble may yield to Rhus tox. In sprains, Calcarea ostrearum follows when Rhus has relieved, but failed to cure.

Dr .PRAKASH VAKIL ---Brachial neuralgia - Rhus toxicodendron - "CALC-FLOUR COMPLEMENTARY TO RHUS-TOX PARTICULARLY IN RHEUMATIC CONDITIONSAND ESPECIALLY IN BRACHIAL NEURALGIA WHEN RHUS-TOX RELIEVES THE PAIN BUT FAIL TO CURE. SOMETHING ABOUT BELLADONA

1) Belladona is thirsty in GIT affections (Reference Dr.K.D Kanodia from Materia Medica classics)

2)In most homeopathic materia medicas great emphasis is placed on the "suddenness" of belladonna conditions. This "sudden" quality certainly pertains to acute conditions and also to some of the individual crises of chronic conditions, but in the typical chronic cases one very frequently sees a slow steady intensification of symptomatology over the years. Thus, it is usual to find a history where the symptoms began rather innocuously but have been progressing steadily, such that within the last year or so the condition has become unbearable, driving the patient to seek treatment. The pathology of the constitutional belladonna patient generally confines itself to the physical level; this contrasts with the usual patient course seen in other remedies. Typically, a patient will initially manifest only physical symptoms, but, with added stress or suppressive medical therapies, the disease penetrates to involve deeper levels of the organism, i.e. , the mental-emotional sphere. Consequently, in most cases, one sees a mixture of both psychological and physical symptoms. belladonna constitutions, however, seem to "quarantine" the pathology to but some specific physical disorder, perhaps because of their relatively higher vitality. In these patients one usually encounters a history of a progressive intensification of the physical disorder and little evidence of mental or emotional affections. For example, one often hears a patient relate a history of migraine headaches which originally were infrequent and rather mild but which have in the past two years increased in frequency to several times a week and which consist of an almost maddening pain.
As a consequence of the above observations, one can say that the diagnosis and prescription of belladonna is generally made on the basis of physical disorders. However, a characteristic belladonna personality does exist.( Dr. George Vithoulkas in his MATERIA MEDICA VIVA)

SOMETHING ABOUT ABROTANUM - Part 1

1)A great characteristic is the so-called metastasis and the alternation between different disease symptoms i.e. one diseased condition completely disappears and another takes its place.
Inflammation of the parotids changes to inflammation in the testes or mammary glands. (Puls.,) Hydrocele after suppressed eruption. Headache alternates with hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids alternate with rheumatism. Rheumatism alternates with diarrhea or dysentery. Diarrhea alternates with constipation
2)The weakness and prostration combined with a kind of hectic fever can also occur after an influenza especially in children. (One should not only think of remedies like Gels., Chin., etc. in such cases.)
3)* Metastasis.
* Ill effects of suppressed conditions especially in gouty subjects
* After operation upon the chest for hydrothorax or empyaemia, a pressing sensation remains.
4) By and large the best picture of Abrotanum is to be found in Allen's keynotes - Dr.M L Tyler
5)The changing of one so-called disease into another always calls attention to Abrotanum.
or Pulsatilla, but Abrot. has cured when these remedies have failed.
